College takes action after victim’s parents approached anti-ragging helpline of HRD ministry.
A doctor has been fined and four students at M P Shah Medical College in Jamnagar have been suspended for a month for allegedly ragging a student.
The action was taken after victim Urmi Vijaykumar’s, parents approached the Union HRD ministry anti-ragging helpline in New Delhi, which forwarded the complaint to the college authorities. This is the first time in the history of this medical college that girl students have been suspended for flouting anti-ragging rules.
Dean Dr Vikas Sinha, said: “Dr Rupam Solanki, who has recently completed her internship with M P Shah Medical college, has been asked to pay a fine of Rs 25,000. Besides, four girls — third-year student Payal Chavda, second-year students Falguni Dhar, Nikita Mevad and Nirupama Sunsara — have been suspended for a month from the college.”
The Dean said Urmi was subjected to mental humiliation, which according to a gazette by the Medical Council of India, invites stern punishment.
Sources said after getting a complaint from the anti-ragging helpline last week, the college authorities called in the five girls and the complainant. “We found that the complaint was genuine and took the step,” said Dr Sinha.
According to the reports, the accused and the victim belong to the same caste and the girls were pressurising Urmi to join their group after the freshers’ party. The seniors threatened Urmi with termination of her scholarship if she refused.
“The harassment went on for a couple of months. The fresher finally broke down this month and her father approached the anti-ragging helpline,” said Dr Sinha.
At the end, a self motivated student of first M.B.B.S. heartily thanked the efforts made by the team
